The promise of America is that if you work hard and play by the rules, you can get ahead. But today that promise is at risk. We’re not investing enough in education and innovation, and we continue to give tax breaks to those who need them least, at the expense of the middle class.
Like middle-class families throughout America, our families here in Illinois are struggling. But, back in Washington, Tea Party obstructionists and extreme ideologies have gotten in the way of solving the complex problems we face. Fewer and fewer Americans are identifying as middle class. We’re losing that American promise.
Middle-class families deserve the safety and security of knowing that our kids have room to grow, healthy food to eat, clean water to drink, fresh air to breathe, and the promise of opportunity with each new day. The safety and security that allows parents the privilege of resting easy every night, knowing that their future is provided for with a comfortable retirement and affordable health care.
As a member of Congress, I will be a strong voice for rebuilding our middle class and will promote common sense policies that create jobs, improve educational opportunities, and increase access to health care. There must also be a concerted effort to help those affected most by these hard times get back on their feet and on a path toward realizing their individual Dream.
